Summary/Abstract: This essay introduces Antal Molnár’s sociology of „the New Music”. Molnár combines philosophical and sociological ideas to give an introduction and aesthetic evaluation of the new projects and aspirations that characterized composition in the early decades of the 20th century. Molnár’s work represents a distinctive and original voice in Hungarian music aesthetics that relies on concepts such as “style”, “Geist” and “Weltanschauung”, and introduces a set of “ideal types” for the analysis of musical works. Molnár’s work is still a valuable contribution to the understanding of musical works and movements, even if the subsequent development of music sociology and aesthetics relegates its significance from theoretical debates to the context of history of ideas.
