Summary/Abstract: Passable borders is a term that has been often been used in recent years. Its significance, however, is important not only for the present and the future (EU accession, Schengen, etc.), it also played an important role in everyday life in the past. People crossed borders for different reasons in certain eras and naturally the number of those crossing a border was different. Mass border crossing appeared in Hungary in modern times. Traditional agricultural societies generally have a low level of geographical mobility. Before the development of the railway system masses of people did not have the opportunity (except for military reasons) to travel a long distance outside the country. Consequently, there was no need for a large number of standard-issue passports.
