Summary/Abstract: The First World War changed Europe: the fall of the Russian, German, andAustro-Hungarian empires provided the opportunity for the Kingdom of Romania toreconsider its borders, and for the polish people to re-establish a polish state. Thehead of the polish state, Józef Piłsudski, strived to establish Poland as a regionalruler. To do that he conceived the Intermarium. The article tries to clarify theIntermarium term and how it was used by the historians and statesmen. ThroughIntermarium, Józef Piłsudski, sought to fulfil his vison about the future and the roleof Poland in Europe. Primarily, Intermarium was a federal program based on thePolish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Later, Józef. Piłsudski reshaped the Intermarium’sconfiguration and proposed a cooperation project, that failed entirely. Also, thearticle presents the Romanian vision on filling the vacuum of power between Russiaand Germany.
