Summary/Abstract: Today’s children, the generation born between 1982-1994, also known as „Generation Y” or „Millennials”, are the first generation of digital natives, meaning they were born, raised and educated in a world in which their own lifestyle has been overwhelmingly influenced by digital media. The effects – sometimes unexpected and difficult to fully appreciate – of this digital explosion are manifested on all levels of human life, even from the earliest ages: physical and mental illness. Of these, the Christian psychologist Dmitri Avdeev mentions: the depression or the feeling of emptiness and spiritual desolation, if the dependent person does not have access, as he would like, to the technology, its use to improve the disposition, to ignore or forget personal problems and troubles, that is, an artificial or forced modification of the mental state. Knowing all these realities, the American Academy of Pediatrics, in 1999, and then in 2011, proposed to the parents a family plan for the use of digital technology. Among the recommendations most insistently emphasized is the prohibition on the use of mobile or smart phones at the table, watching the media content with parents and establishing breaks from the media, developing rational skills and discernment towards them.
