Summary/Abstract: The article refers to the historian Jean Delumeau, recently deceased. His death was an opportunity for the entire media in the „hexagon” to evoke in unison, in a huge chorus of praise, the personality of the deceased, the value and originality of his work. For those who learned only now about Jean Delumeau and the value of his work, but also for those who knew him beforehand, a question might arise: To what extent the interests and investigations of a medieval historian, specialized in the 12th-13th centuries, could be of interest for today’s generations? And why should we be concerned about understanding the concept of „pastoral of fear” (la pastorale de la peur), „forged” by Jean Delumeau, which he repeatedly highlights throughout his work? Guillaume Cuchet’s study proposes a relevant answer.
