Summary/Abstract: This article is a comparative analysis of Czesław Miłosz’s poem Kuźnia and its translation, Blacksmith Shop, by Miłosz himself along with Robert Hass in Berkeley in 1989. In discussing the changes introduced by the Polish poet in his translation, Miłosz’s statements on literary translation are quoted. The differences between Kuźnia and Blacksmith Shop – both formal (graphic divisions) as well as thematic (passivism/ activism) – are discussed.
