Expressing the spatial relationships in French and Finnish from the historical perspective

Summary/Abstract: The article presents completely different ways and sources of expressing the spatial dimension in two unrelated language families. The French language, by inheriting the Latin and Indo-European system, uses prepositions, prefixes and adverbs mixing them sometimes with nouns and verbs. The novelty is also seen in the more frequent use of postpositions. Finnish, by inheriting the Uralic system, uses cases (often compound ones), postpositions containing suffixes of cases as well as adverbs – also often with suffixes of cases. Thanks to the contacts with the Indo-European languages, its affluent system of expressing spatial dimension has been further enriched with prepositions. The Indo-European languages also influenced the more frequent use of postpositions in the form of prepositions that gives even more precision of a word.
