Summary/Abstract: The article deals with the issue of the work of Exarch Stephan I Bulgarian (1878 – 1957) concerning the ecumenical movement that began in the beginning of the 20th century. On the basis of the preserved archive and literary heritage of the ecclesiastic, his partiality for the ecumenical doctrine has been presented as an important part of his ideological biography. The consecutive factual material traces all initiatives and participations of the bishop in the world ecumenical forums. Exarch Stephan’s participation in the All-Orthodox Meeting in Moscow in 1948, where he was made to renounce the ecumenical ideas in public, has been discussed and analyzed. The ecclesiastic’s personal drama in the years of his exile which testify that he did not change his convictions for ecumenism in spite of the turn he was forced to make has also been discussed.
