Summary/Abstract: The article describes the role of social media in the information society and the use of them by the public administration. For the analysis there were selected and assessed most popular types of social media. The evaluation included trends in the use of this type of information channels in dissemination of statistical knowledge as a way to build the image of official statistics in society. Particular attention was paid to their role in the activities of national statistical offices in the world, and especially in the European Union.
