Summary/Abstract: This article deals with an innovative type of comparatives in Slovincian (Kashubian) (cf., e.g. gąstńei̯šï ‘thicker’ ← gąstï ‘thick’, as opposed to the inherited forms gąstšï, gąscei̯šï). The -ń- extension of the formative originates from intransitive change-of-state verbs of the type gąstńec ‘to become thick(er)’ ← gąstï. This phenomenon reflects a more general tendency in the development of Slavic and Indo-European languages. The significance of the Slovincian material is that it provides synchronic evidence from the first half of the twentieth century.
