The lament in the Vişeu area

Summary/Abstract: In Vișeu area, situated in Maramureș County, the mourning, , is less and less cultivated, due to the change of people’s mentality and urbanization, fact that makes this genre to be difficult to collect and in some areas it is even on the verge of extinction. For these reasons we thought it would be necessary to save, while still possible, some of these ethnographic remains. Thus, several mournings were registered, textually and melodically analyzed then a compared analysis was made in order to extract the general features of the local mourning. The mourning we still can find in Vișeu area presents, from the point of view of the text, the same general features and many poetic motifs common to the folk line with funeral specific. From melodic point of view, it is based on a modal melodic construction presenting a basic Doric type pentachord structure. The architectonic structure of the local mourning melodies is strophic with AAkBBk form, having four melodic lines. The ambitus of the melodies is restricted, it does not surpass a quint, while the melodic profile is generally descendent.
