Summary/Abstract: The aim of the article is to compare the situation of public finance in the twelve largest European economies, i.e. Germany, France, Great Britain, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Sweden, Norway, Poland, Belgium and Austria. In addition to debt and budget balance indicators the author analyzes social and public expenditure and total budgetary revenues indicators, as well as revenues from property and income taxes as well as the related to production and imports. The key determinants of a Europe-wide trend of permanent increase in borrowing countries are indicated, too.
