Summary/Abstract: The goal of my research is to analyze the influence of the manipulative photographic image on the public during the process of visual communication. Part of the manipulative strategies used by the modern print and digital media to influence the public, are constructed with the help of the visual language of the photographic images. The research is focused on the content of two landmark photographs, taken in an interval of 100 years. These are the posthumous photographs of the assassinated Bulgarian prime ministers Stephan Stambolov (1854 1895) and Andrei Lukanov (1938 1996). The psychological effect of the photographs, which are presented through the simplified communicational channel of the print media, aims to influence the minds of the public in order to change their behaviour. I consider the two photographs as an attempt of an open or hidden manipulation which is not realized by the object of this manipulation. I analyze the impact of the photograsphs as a purposeful influence which incites the public to act in a manner that is useful for the author of the manipulation.
