Summary/Abstract: This paper addresses the significant role of the Dalmatian Assembly Speaker, the Trogirborn Vicko Ivčević, in the Croatian politics in the early 20th century, with the emphasis on his specific views on the so-called New Course policy. This political stream appeared in Dalmatia, in 1903, and was supported by major political figures of the time. Its main aim was establishing an independent Yugoslav state within Austria-Hungary, and in order to achieve that, the policy supporters opted for a cooperation with Budapest and against Vienna. Vicko Ivčević was renowned as a moderate politician who favoured Vienna: he carefully thought about his political moves before he decided to make them. In this light, he refused to sign the Rijeka Resolution, but agreed to support and sign the Zadar Resolution. During his mandate as speaker, he showed remarkable tolerance and moderation towards fervent supporters of the New Course.
