Summary/Abstract: Introduction: Obesity is chronic disease which is both a cosmetic problem and a health problem as well. It represents a significant risk factor involved in development of many diseases, especially cardiovascular and metabolic diseases (ischemic cardiac disease, stroke, hyper-tension, diabetes, dyslipidemia, hyperuricemia), oncological diseases (colon, endometrium, breast) and disorders of musculoskeletal system. Aim: The aim of this article article is to point out the importance of a general practitioner in obesity management. His role is to detect obesity and participate on its treatment in cooperation with other specialists. Core of work: Diagnostics of obesity is not any problem. The challenge is its treatment since it is very complex. It consists of a diet, physical activity, congnitive-behavioral therapy, pharmacotherapy and in sever cases bariatric surgery. Conclusion: Every patient requires an individual approach. General practitioners are those doctors who know these patients the most since they usually treat them from the moment they enter adulthood to their old age. They are able to motivate them and lead them to change their lifestyle. A correctly motivated patient who trusts his doctor is crucial for achieving the desired goal.
