Summary/Abstract: Introduction: Systemic retinoids are exceptionally effective drugs widely used in dermatology. In spite of their great effectiveness, these drugs have a relatively unfavorable profile of adverse effects. Good interdisciplinary informedness is a crucial requirement for the utilization of maximal therapeutic effect and a useful tool for reducing risks of potential harm to patients. Research objectives: The aim of this article is to provide a comprehensive review of currently available scientific information on systemic retinoid therapy with respect to ocular adverse effects. Core of Work: Ocular adverse effects of isotretinoin include: atrophy of meibomian glands, blepharoconjunctivitis, impaired dark adaptation, myopia, corneal opacities, and teratogenic abnormalities of the eye Conclusion: Despite the significant prevalence of some of the above-mentioned adverse effects, there is very limited scientific evidence describing the underlying mechanisms, clinical presentation, course and their potential reversibility. The article summarizes currently available information on this topic.
