Summary/Abstract: Portrait of the eminent Bulgarian linguist, literary critic and bibliographer Academician Alexander Teodorov-Balan (1859–1959) – the first rector of the Sofia University “St. Kl. Ohridski”. The text is organized into the following topics: The lineage and the family of Academician Balan; The Academician; The Patriarch of Bulgarian Philological Science; The Patriarch of Bulgarian Modern Bibliography; The public man Acad. Balan; List of most important publications about Academician Balan. The highlights of his personal life are presented; his contributions to linguistics, literary studies and bibliography are summarized. The first attempt is made to introduce the public man Balan, on the basis of his journalistic works, printed on the pages of Bulgarian newspapers and magazines for the period 1882–1942. His Masonic activity is also addressed. For the first time a List of the most important publications about Academician Balan is published.
