Summary/Abstract: The Syrian conflict has lasted for almost a decade, and the chances of ousting Bashar al-Assad are dwindling. The Russian Federation and Iran continue to maintain their political, military, financial and logistical support for keeping Bashar al-Assad in power, and Turkey is politically, militarily and logistically supporting its opposing rebels. After strongly supporting rebel forces, especially their Kurdish allies, in the fight against government forces and Islamist terrorists for several years, the United States withdrew its troops from the Syrian theater. The year 2020 coincided, however, with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, a factor of instability that shapes the dynamics of the conflict and its future trajectory, but also has an impact on the strategic interests of relevant actors (USA, Russian Federation, Iran, Turkey, but also the Syrian regime).
