An anniversary that could have been overlooked. Alternative religious festivities

Summary/Abstract: The article concerns the issue of the autocephaly of the Ukrainian Church and the religious events organized in Kiev and Moscow on the occasion of the 1030th anniversary of the “Christianization of the Russians”. Historical divergences between Russian and Ukrainian Orthodox people stem from the inconsistency between Kiev’s conception and that of Moscow regarding the existence of a “Ukrainian Church”. From Kiev’s point of view, the “Ukrainian Church” was born on the Dnieper River having as its “mother” the Church of New Rome, Constantinople, following the baptism of kneaz Vladimir together with all his subjects. Only after the territories of Kiev were under foreign Catholic occupation, and the fall of Constantinople occurred, the Metropolitan of Kiev had to obey Moscow. Moscow considers itself the only legitimate successor of the ancient Russian state and the Kiev Church.
