Summary/Abstract: As a point of departure the author comments on the fragmentary (quotation-like) presence of Shakespeare in contemporary culture. Then he goes on to use Roman Jakobson’s model of communication to analyse several examples of how the Shakespearean quotation has been appropriated by means of transference into a new context. Using Jakobson’s model enables us to study the changes which the original text undergoes in the process of cultural transmission.
