Summary/Abstract: In the etiology of addiction, various factors related to the individual, family, school, peers and community play a significant role. Although all the above factors are interrelated, the family represents the most important context for the occurrence and prevention of numerous sociopathological phenomena, including the use and dependence on psychoactive substances. All conceptual models of addiction prevention are family-oriented and are most often considered the basic agent and backbone of all other factors in the overall prevention work. The processes that take place in the family, the structure and the upbringing styles that parents use are related to whether young people will start using psychoactive substances or not. Through positive and strong bonds between family members, clear rules of conduct that are consistently enforced in the family, parental supervision of children’s activities, the family provides protection to children from various forms of socially unacceptable behaviors. However, the family can act as an incentive to use psychoactive substances if there is a chaotic atmosphere, especially if there is already drug abuse in the family, if parents use inadequate parenting approaches, if there is no closeness and connection between family members. A functional family is the foundation of addiction prevention. It is necessary to raise parents' awareness of the role of the family in addiction prevention and teach them parenting skills that will improve the preventive capacities of the family.
