Summary/Abstract: This article, based on a wider research on Jacques Maritain’s influence in Romanian philosophy and theological thought, focuses on one of the most distinguished victims of the communist persecution, Mircea Vulcănescu. It presents his views on French culture, Maritain’s work and his attempts to balance, in a possible construction the West and the East of the European spirituality. The central point here is that, opposing the skepticism of his contemporaries, Vulcănescu immerses himself deep in history with a realism that is his reception and response to a calling. His role model for this attitude was Jacques Maritain.
