Summary/Abstract: In the sources there is no direct connection between the Bulgarian ruler Samuil (997 – 1014) and the relics of St. John of Rila. The reason for writing this article is a reading of the name of the Byzantine emperor Manuel I Comnenus (1143 – 1180) as Samuel in the German's manuscript from the fifteenth century, which contains the life of St. John of Rila written by George Skylitzes in the twelfth century. This mention of the name indicates a possible connection between the Bulgarian ruler and the holy relics.
