Summary/Abstract: The paper discusses the difficulties encountered when trying to define the opposition in the post-war Polish political system. There is even disagreement over what terms should be used to describe those groups that sought to defy the political legitimacy of the authorities of the period. There were many factors involved, of which a main one was the considerable variety of ways in which the situation was contested. The text also refers to several typologies of the opposition that can be found in the literature and which, at least to some extent, demonstrate this variety. It presents the roles played by the opposition, which were partly identical with those in democratic systems, and partly unique.
