Summary/Abstract: With the completion of the Spanish political transition to democracy comes to an end the task of the philosopher Julián Marías as a member of the Spanish Senate. The same cannot be said about his intellectual life, always active and watchful of what he considers his social role as a thinker. Marías will thus undertake an in-depth review of the numerous reflections concerning Spain’s past and present he had developed during the Francoist dictatorship and the transition to democracy. Three are the essays collecting this endeavour: España inteligible: razón histórica de las Españas (1985), Cervantes clave española (1990), and España ante la historia y ante sí misma (1898-1936) (1996). In these writings the philosopher gives his interpretation of the Spanish history for the purpose of permanently get over the accounts that, according to him, have distorted across time and in different latitudes the proper understanding of the Spanish past, with dire consequences.
