“EVREI” AND “ZHID”. SOME ETHNOLINGUISTIC REFLECTIONS
Author(s): Zygmunt GrosbartSubject(s): Language studies, Philology

Summary/Abstract: The author discusses the use of two words for the ethnonym “Jew” - “еврей” and“жид” - in Polish, Russian, and Ukrainian, and in the relations between those three Slavonic languages. The analysis has been conducted in view of the creative power of the word, which, as Humboldt put it, in a sense creates an image of the world “by tying it to man”.
