„WEST” IN RUSSIAN PHRASEOLOGY

Summary/Abstract: The subject of the investigation is idioms used in the Russian newspaper texts of 1980-1985 to describe various phenomena in the countries of the West. Most of the above idioms are borrowings from English. The idioms are divided into two categories: 1) idioms describing the relations in the capitalist countries (mainly Britain and the USA)— 12 thematic groups; 2) idioms describing international relations - 5 thematic groups. The paper also analyses the functions of idioms in newspaper texts.
