Appropriateness as a sine qua non of communicative competence

Summary/Abstract: The main research objective of this study is to define the role and standards of appropriateness in communicative competence. Therefore, the specific objective of this article is to state what determines appropriateness – what is and how to determine that someone behaves appropriately in a specific communication situation. The article contains the review of the current state of research. As a result of the analysis of the content of the literature on the subject of communicative competence, appropriateness and politeness, the key notions for the undertaken subject were systematized, the role of appropriateness in communicative competence was determined and the standards of appropriateness confirming that one has communicative competence were presented.
