Summary/Abstract: Spurred by strong optimism of the second wave of the feminist movement,Ursula Le Guin created one of the most complex and politically sophisticated novels ofthe contemporary utopian fiction – critical utopia The Dispossessed. In аn attempt to pavethe way towards postpatriarchal future, the author of this multi-award winning utopiannovel introduced important innovations in the representation of underprivileged membersof society, and especially of women, whose interests were often neglected in the canonicalutopias that had been published in the previous periods. Apart from addressing burningissues of gender and class inequality, Le Guin also managed to challenge the perfectionismand one-dimensionality of the earlier visions of utopian societies by envisioning tworadically different, but essentially flawed social systems on twin planets Urras and Annares. The imaginative depiction of these planets reflects the author’s interest in anarchist theoryand Taoist philosophy, which in turn set her utopia apart from other critical utopias thatconstitute an inseparable part of the ongoing feminist struggle to achieve a better world.
