Summary/Abstract: The first step in identifying the learners and finding out what needs they are likely to have is to look at the kind of jobs they are doing. Even if the learners have not started their jobs yet, it will be possible to see what general category they are going to fit into, and thus to predict what kinds of needs they will have in the future and what will be useful to include in their course books. Being able to make some predictions about needs on the basis of the job description does not preclude the requirement for carrying out a full needs analysis. There are many people whose jobs and needs do not fit neatly into categories. The following outline is to help build up a general pattern of understanding about business and what business people do, and it will lay the foundations for needs analysis and language analysis and the selection of course components. We can draw distinctions between three very broad categories: (1) managerial, (2) technical, and (3) secretarial/clerical positions.
