Summary/Abstract: The aim of this article is to bring closer the issues related to the functioning of villages – auxiliary units of a commune characteristic for rural areas. The study indicates the legal basis for the functioning of these units, starting with the Constitution, through statutory acts, ending up with acts creating their legal position, that is statutes. The status of individual village authorities and the basic principles of their financing have also been discussed, often referring to the reality of the Gryfino commune. In addition, the opinion of legal scholars and commentators as well as the jurisprudence on the above issues has been taken into account.
