Summary/Abstract: This article is about the present-day people who are trying to cope with boredom created by the industrial system. On one side, there is those who leave the system and do their own business; on the other side, there is a competitive consumer crowd, mostly white collar, who try to be visible by consuming the different. Inspired by Veblen, they are named leisure class in this article. The leisure class, with their competitive consumption habits, try to be visible by consuming different and qualified products of those who escape from the industrial system. Their effort to be visible is closely related to the “spectacle” and social media is a medium that both triggers and facilitates this. Meanwhile, this situation has made people increasingly narcissistic, making narcissism the value of our age. In conclusion, this article is a zeitgeist criticism by utilizing Veblen's leisure class and DeBord's spectacle concepts.
