Summary/Abstract: Christian religious folklore is a mixture of heterogeneous conceptions and beliefs, which have little in common with the doctrine of the church. Such are the popular legends and ballads from Western Europe about the crucifix painted by the devil, that have circulated in Catholic countries from the Middle Ages (attested in Spain in the 13th century) to the end of the 19th century (mostly attested in regions on the southern side of the Alps). This motif from the folk literature also had a visual expression in paintings and devotional images depicting the crucified Christ with a very bloody appearance. This theme appeared and evolved in close connection with the motif of the pact with the devil.
