FORTUNATOV’S SCHOOL OF RUSSIAN LINGUISTICS

Summary/Abstract: F. F. Fortunatov was the professor of the Moscow University from 1876 to 1902 and the founder of the Moscow linguistic school. This time was the period of the positivist philosophy and the historical linguistics. Fortunatov was infl uenced by them, and his ideas were close to the German school of the Neogrammarians. However, he also studied synchronic linguistics, especially the theory of grammar through the morphological approach. Fortunatov had many disciples, many of his ideas are still relevant, and some traditions of his school have been preserved until now. However, the evolution of these traditions and Fortunatov’s role in the development of modern language science have not been suffi ciently studied. This paper is the fi rst of its kind to comprehensively explore his contribution and legacy, as well as Fortunatov’s similarities to and diff erences from his predecessors and colleagues.
