Summary/Abstract: The issue of dual citizenship has been stirred up Hungarian public life in 2004. Although dual citizenship, as one possible policy solution regarding the nation, gained real currency only after the December 5, 2004 referendum. Is dual citizenship, a real solution to the problems of Hungarians living abroad? What exactly are these problems: minority protection, social, psychological or maybe travel-related issues? Extending Hungarian citizenship to Hungarians abroad cannot be regarded as the right instrument to express the Hungarian homeland policy, or as a completely misplaced one. As all other solutions, it must be treated according to its own merits. The real question is what aim it is meant to achieve, and how it expresses the realistic and equitable aims of the Hungarian policy towards the nation.
