ISAAC BABEL. REPORTS IN THE DIARY CYCLE (1918)

Summary/Abstract: The text constitutes a commentary to the publication of three sketches by I. Babel, not reprinted since 1918. In the commentary it is said about the beginnings of the literary activity of Babel, and in particular about a cycle of reports and sketches entitled A diary published in the columns of Piotrograd paper “Novaia žizn”. These sketches reflected situations and phenomena in the life of Piotrogrod of the first months after the October Revolution and at the same time expressed a specific attitude of Babel towards revolution, namely using ethical criteria mainly in evaluation of the revolution. On the formal level the sketches continued a stylistic current presented by the beginning writer in the works of 1915-1917, that is the tendency to naturalistic deformation, emphasized objectivism of narration, presentation of phenomena by means of the technique of contrast.
