Summary/Abstract: The present comparative study is the discussion of the principles of construction of plot in L. T olstoy’s story The Death of Ivan Ilich and A. Chekhov’s story Uninteresting story. The problem is considered by the author in the following aspects: 1) through the characteristics of specific features of the crucial event in the story (i.e. event which determines lines of development of the plot); 2) through the analysis of plot series and their various causal-effect relations; 3) through the analysis of the construction of space and time depending on the whole of the plot. The point of departure for the comparison of both works was adopted by the author — the analogies of the problems existing between them and subjects which had an impact on the formation of similarities of plot schemes. The principal common features of construction in the stories of Tolstoy, Chekhov are presented as a result of unity of the basic assumptions of understanding and formation of the hero in the works of both writers. Whereas the reason for clearly drawn differences in the construction of the plot of The Death of Ivan Ilich and Unintersting story is seen in: 1) separate specificity of relations for each work: the main hero and the world presented that surrounds him, 2) the use of various principles of formation and connecting of elements of the structure. The above article should be understood as the initial stage in the research on: a) typology of works of Tolstoy and Chekhov, b) tradition and innovatory character of the works of Chekhov, c) typological features of stories as the literary genre.
