Summary/Abstract: In the article the author made an analysis of the functioning of motifs of night, dream and death in the poetry of M. Cvietaieva. These motifs, of the Romantic origin, are treated by the poet very originally: while using the achievements of Russian poetic tradition (that of Tiutchev and Blok in particular) the poet supplies them with new contents. When analysing her poems one can observe the evolution of the concepts in which we are interested, which is related to the poet’s personal experience and with the experience of the whole nation. And so, e.g. from the enchantment with the night, being the synonym of love and spontaneity the poet comes to its understanding as the “deep time of the soul” — difficult time of uncovering the truth, the feeling of duty and the burden of fate. The dream, condemned in the youthful lyrics, in the mature works of the author of Insomnia appears as a chosen manner of relations with people, a compensation for the limitations of consciousness. The understanding of death changes as well, the death in which M. Cvietaieva is so much interested in the course of her literary activity. The analysis of the motifs of dream, night and death proved their dynamism and ambivalence.
