Summary/Abstract: The paper deals with the debate initiated by Đuro Šurmin about the fleeting e in the family name Maček. By arguing whether the declined version of the name should be Maček – Mačeka or Maček – Mačka, Šurmin actually discusses a peculiarity of the Croatian language and the affiliation of the Kajkavian dialect to the Croatian language.
