Summary/Abstract: In Taman, as in the whole novel The Hero of Our Time, the time of the action is historically indefinite. Lermontov, unlike other Russian writers, introduces factual geographical space where the main hero acts. The writer needs it for the plot; the subsequent action takes place in unreal space, given by the narrator, who also takes part in the action emotionally. At the same time Lermontov keeps strictly to the principle of “the point of view”. The space in the novel is not static despite the fact that it is always given from the point of view of the narrator who is motionless. The story-teller does not break his narration because he gives only those details of the space which he can observe and which he needs for the story. For epic space Lermontov uses perspective colour and sound, the description of which is subjected to the emotional perception of the narrator.
