Summary/Abstract: W. H. Auden was the first Struga Poetry Evenings laureate who was awarded with the prestigious Golden Wreath Award for his complete life opus. The decision was controversial not only because Auden came from the western side of the “Iron Curtain”, but also due to his reputation as a prominent Christian sage of the 20th century. However, this was not always the case. The oscillations between atheism and Christianity are an important part of Auden’s life and creative trajectory. This oscillation can be explained with the concept of paradigm-shift. Testimonies from Auden’s life point to four dramatic experiences that decisively influenced him to abandon atheism and embrace theism. Finally, the article will try to answer as to why Auden chose Christianity.
