Summary/Abstract: Today, the close relations between football and show business are clearly evident and omnipresent. Yet, in the 1950s, even the most prominent players were still associated mainly with their accomplishments on the field and rarely appeared on the covers of non-sport-related magazines. This situation changed in the 1960s. One of the first stars of this new era was George Best, who had his greatest triumphs with Manchester United. His incredible football skills went hand-in-hand with his image as a handsome and cavalier womanizer, whose nonchalant manner attracted the attention of crowds. This was, however, only one side of the coin. Beneath the façade of an ever-smiling jokester lay the human drama of an addiction to alcohol. The disease not only contributed to a premature end to his sporting success with MU, it also led to the footballer’s death at the age of 59.
