Summary/Abstract: The article discusses the origin of the terms stem-compound and word-compound in the linguistics of Russia and that of the Soviet Union. Though the istinction between the two terms in Russian linguistic literature has not been frequently made, it is suggested that the two terms be differenciated. The basis for the distinction is the fact, that the terms denote distinct kinds of the operation called com pounding but further subdivided into stem-compounding as opposed to word-compounding.
