Summary/Abstract: In the immediate aftermath of 1989, the annus mirabilis of the late twentieth century, intellectual audiences in both the East and the West appeared convinced that ideas would play a great role in post-communist politics. According to knowledgeable observers such as Václav Havel and Andrew Arato, the end of communist domination in Europe marked the ascent of a new set of political ideas articulated by the former dissidents and effectively used in the struggle for freedom, for example, “living in truth,” “antipolitics,” and “self-limiting revolution.” [...]
