SOME REMARKS ABOUT THE SOVIET SCHOOL OF TRANSLATION

Summary/Abstract: The author of the article makes a survey of the development of the Soviet art of translationstarting from the first translations of 1917 up to the present time. Gorki and the publishinghouse ‘Vsemirnaja Literatura’ that he founded, played a great role in the revival of the arttranslation. Works printed in this publishing house distinguished themselves by their high standard of their content and form, though they suffered from being too literal. The artistic quality of works during the 1930’s, in which authors followed Gorki’s principles (planning and selection) varied. In general, however, the art of translation reached a high standard. Translations of the 1934-41 period enriched Russian poetry with new artistic values from different cultures of various nations. In the second part of his article the author discusses the research development in the area of translation theory. Soviet philologists have been specially concerned with combining theory with practice. Theoretical works of the 1930’s advocated variety in the form and method of translating, in contrast to the conviction prevailing in the 1920’s which considered translation as unfeasible. In the 1950’s and 1960’s the growth of interest in translation theory is considerable. The current opinion during that time was that translation thoery is a branch of linguistics. Recent works, such as Etkind’s, differentiate between a linguistic and a literary approach to translation problems.
