Summary/Abstract: The article is devoted to the methodological problems associated with the literary tradition and writing culture of Galicia and the Carpathian region and with its ethno-cultural identity. Particular attention is paid to the problem of multiculturalism of the province, the multidimensionality of its cultural tradition and ethno-national identity. For some, Galicia (as Halychyna) is the Ukrainian linguistic-cultural and literary Piedmont, which reaches the roots of the ancient Rus’. For others, this is Galicja, the territory of the Polish language, Polish cultural and literary influences, Polish Piedmont. For part of the authors, Galicia (Galizien) denoted only the former province, the periphery of Austro-Hungarian monarchy. The uneasy political history of the region, ethno-cultural processes within the Carpathian region were reflected in the history of its literature and cultural tradition.
