Summary/Abstract: In the context in which, at the beginning of the 19th century, the Slovaks were striving to eliminate the confessional and linguistic divergences in order to consolidate their national consciousness, P. J. Šafárik represents a transitional moment in the Slovak history. As a supporter of the Czechoslovak solidarity, the scholar P. J. Šafárik militates for the Czechoslovak language and culture, an idea that the Slovak intellectuals will adopt up to a certain point on the axis of their history, after which, although initially seduced by Panslavism, they will take a distance from the Czechs so as to codify their own language and to assert their national identity.
