Summary/Abstract: The study addresses the organization of the general census of the population of the Russian Empire from 1897. The identification of the actors, methodology and stages of the census allows the elucidation of the specificity of this project in the case of the Russian Empire. At the same time, the large number of identified deficiencies, both operative and methodological, questions the objectivity of the data. We consider that both the deficiencies of the general census and the attempts to overcome them are symptomatic for the entire administrative system of the Russian Empire. For Bessarabia, shaping the demographic, social and ethno-confessional picture determines the specific place of this gubernia within the Russian Empire and highlights the effects of the policies undertaken by the center at the periphery.
