Summary/Abstract: The article analyses the modal meaning of the verb homonymous to the imperative. In the author’s opinion, this form of the verb under definite conditions can express real as well as unreal modality. If the modality is real, the action which is to take place is real itself. In this case the form of the verb which is homonymous to the imperative is nothing else but a syntactic synonym of the verb in the indicative mood. In the formation an expression of unreal modality, besides intonation which here plays the main part, the order of the parts of the compound clause and correlation of modal-tense forms of verb-predicates are of great importance.
