Summary/Abstract: The present essay is an attempt at the reconstruction of the history of four technical terms that are widely used in the modern art of ballet. These are: arabesque, attitude, cabriole, entrechat. The author based her research on different materials: history of ballet, books on the methods of teaching of classical, and comical dance as well as on partnership. Diaries, monographs, reviews, theatrical programmes and examples from literature have also been used. While analyzing the selected ballet terms from the point of view of history the author attempts at establishing the date of appearance of those borrowings in the Rus sian language. The process of their phonetic and grammatical assimilation has also been presented.
